Challenge #3 - Painting Yellow Flowers

Painting for Yellow FlowersReference for Yellow FlowersPosted - May 14, 2020

In this video I discuss painting flowers and clear glass with water.

Use my reference or take one of your own. Paint at least three to five flowers in a vase. Focus on the ellipses and the subtle value differences of the blooms that you are painting. Fill up your canvas and make it interesting.

In the photograph: The subtle value differences on the flowers may be difficult to see.

In the video:  I was unable to paint the vase from the same direction that the camera was viewing the still-life so I periodically rotated towards the viewer and then towards myself. Also, I was taller than the tripod so I was seeing a wider ellipse on the surface of the water than you are seeing as the viewer.

Remember: Flowers are spheres and/or ellipses. The close value changes are what will make them have roundness or shape.

Have Fun! Paint your joy!

Challenge #2 - Painting Rocks

Finished PaintingPosted - April 21, 2020

In this video I discuss painting rocks and brushstrokes.

Use my reference or take one of your own. Paint at least two to six rocks in an assortment of subtle grays and browns. Make them distinct from one another.

In the photograph: Note the overexposure in the sun and underexposure in the shade of the rocks. As the painter you must compensate for this.

Remember: Rocks are like blocks. The planes facing most perpendicular to the light source (usually the upward facing planes - like ground) will be the lightest in value. Planes at an angle to the light source (usually the vertical planes) will be middle value light or middle value dark. Planes facing down will be darkest, but are also slightly lighter than they appear in a photograph due to light reflecting off the ground or other surrounding objects. Paint the dark value in the rock and then reflect color back into/onto those strokes.

Note: For round rocks soften the transition between the values. Think of form shadows.

Challenge #1 - Painting Greens

 Posted - April 11, 2020

Use my reference or take one of your own. Paint at least two to six objects (trees, bushes, leaves, yard elements, starbucks cup on the lawn) in different greens. Make them distinct from one another.

In my You Tube video, I chose 6, but mostly focused on 4: the redwood tree, the plum tree, the locust and the grass.

https://youtu.be/1iJNt36stQQ

The aspect ratio is off on the video. So far, haven't been able to fix it. The information is still good.

Also, the block-in (drawing with paint) was missed. So please use French ultramarine and cadmium scarlet (cadmium red light if not Winsor Newton) or French ultramarine and burnt sienna in different proportions to get your blue to brown colors on the drawing. Wipe off excess paint before painting if needed. See below to the right.

This assignment may be done in any medium.Ready to paint

Your assignment, besides painting, is to provide me with feedback! Thank You!

Draw first Painting Greens reference

Yes, the reference is sideways as is the first block in. Again, I am unable to correct it.

If you click on it to view it larger, it should automagically rotate, but you know what to do if it doesn't...just rotate your head. : )
